On a rare sunny day 27 ladies played on the Old Course at Minchinhampton and to some their first time !  Feedback was brilliant with many vowing to come back and play again.

The long rough proved a bit daunting but balls were found and play continued and a couple of the ladies had 2's on par 3's - Eve Gallagher (Chipping Sodbury) on the 10th andf Janice Titley (Broadway) on the 14th.

Following 18 holes the ladies settled in the Clubhouse for a lovely meal and many were heard to be swopping numbers for further games together.

2015 NEWS

CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE BOWL

Our 3rd annual Championship Challenge Bowl was played at Tewkesbury Park in beautiful sunny conditions.

This was the first time the Partnership have visited Tewkesbury Park and we were given a very warm welcome by Mark the Professional and Sue Rawles, member and our starter for the day.

Although a little nervous with the challenge of an individual medal competition and playing aat a new venue the ladies set off in good spirits and provided some very respectable scores.

The entries this year included one new lady and several who have attended previous events, some of these ladies are now playing more regularly and have joined clubs and even have handicaps.  We are always thrilled to hear about the progress of our ladies, and get great pleasure to know that the system is working.

The day was rounded off with a meal of lasagne and chips and a presentation.

Winner: Challenge Vase - Val Menzies Gross 104

Best Nett - Jean Bailey Nett 80

Stableford Results: 1st Helen Suttleworth 28 pts - 2nd Carol Simonds 27 pts - 3rd Liz Clarridge 26pts

Nearest the Pin: Jean Bailey - Longest Drive: Helen Shuttleworth

From GLCGA representative, Lorna SparkesSPRING BOWMAKER

Our 2015 year started with a Bowmaker at Westonbirt Golf Club on 31stMarch 2015. It was cold, it was wet and it was blowing a gale force wind across this beautiful tree lined course. Did that deter 25 ladies? – No, they were wrapped up and keen to get going!

Sent off in teams of mainly three, each team with a  more experienced beginner, who was responsible for marking the score card and ensuring her team stayed up with the pace of the game in front.

For Gail and myself,  it is so rewarding seeing how so many  of these ladies have improved and now are hitting some lovely golf shots, and enjoying their golf, regardless of the weather!

We had several  new golfers who shook in their golf shoes standing on the 1sttee with an audience watching them tee off,  but they did it and they all did exceptionally well.

A lunch of Soup and Sandwiches went down well before play – many  thanks  to Westonbirt School.  And a warm cuppa and some delicious home- made cakes  (baked by the Westonbirt Captain and Vice Captain --thank you ladies!) awaited us on our return.

Our thanks to Kirsty Taylor for her help on the day and for inviting us to Westonbirt, and to    Debbie Casling and Di Geraghty for their invaluable help.

The winners, with 43 points, were  Kate Dymock, Barbara Hart  and Leslie Gallant

WHERE WILL GOLF TAKE YOU?

Just seven years ago Jane Lakin (pictured) didn't play golf. Heading for retirement she was looking for a new challenge  … and now she is Ladies' Section Captain at Brickhampton Court Golf Club!

Here is her story:

Get into Golf - an article in the local evening paper, with the Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership offering beginners' classes, hit the spot!  I needed a new challenge, something which would get me out in the fresh air, in good company, learning something that I could hopefully improve at.

“I had played hockey and squash in the past, and still played league tennis.........
So, with some trepidation, I made contact, and turned up, keen and very, very green, at the driving range at Brickhampton Court Golf Club.  James was the coach, and he was fun, and encouraging.

“Four free lessons at Brickhampton, and then four more at James' club, which is Cotswold Hills - and the journey in golf was under way!  I did know a couple of the ladies, but soon met loads more - like me, who enjoyed sport, fresh air and a good chat afterwards over coffee etc.  I love the game!
When you play well, you want to do it again, when you play badly you want to sort it out!  This was just the challenge I needed, as I was at an important stage in my life - empty nest with the boys having left home, and imminent retirement.

“As a bit of a career girl, but always loving sports, preferably playing but also watching......golf has become a really important part of this new stage in my life.

“I started by just playing for fun, particularly appreciating the support I received on the Tuesday nights ladies 'turn up' on the 9 hole course at Brickhampton. Then to the 18 hole course and it wasn't long before the competitor in me meant that the friendly games developed into league matches.

“So........in  just a few  years, with lots of support from fellow players, lady captains, coaches etc, - I now play regular league games across the county, and have been 'encouraged' to become the Lady Captain at Brickhampton   this year - what an honour!!”
